The name “Kilimanjaro” is thought to derive from the Swahili word Kilima meaning “mountain” and the Chagga word Njaro, loosely meaning “whiteness,” hence the name White Mountain. The mountain spans an area of 1,712 square kilometers and was declared a National Park in 1973. It was officially opened for tourism in 1977 and later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. In 2013, it was also named one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders, a title well-deserved for its grandeur and global significance.

The Marangu Gate, which houses the park headquarters, lies 41 km from Moshi town and 86 km from the airport. Several other ascent gates surround the mountain base, including Machame, Umbwe, Rongai, Londorosi, Lemosho, Mweka, and Kilema, all reachable by road.
